Nights and weekends, Patrick Garcia gets to work refinishing the floors at the Hotel Castaneda. He works these hours to help keep the dust down for the other workers who are painting and plastering. The red fir floors, gray and battered before he starts, come alive as Pat works. The job takes multiple passes of the sander, with increasingly finer sandpaper as the work progresses. When Pat’s finished, he uses the finest sawdust from the sanding to make a custom wood filler to fix imperfections in the floors.
