It’s time to get started on refinishing the lobby floor, and compared to the upstairs floors, this is a real chore.
The upstairs floors are a nice red-colored fir – a soft wood that’s relatively easy to work. The lobby floor is 1 1/2 inch-wide maple that’s been covered with tile or other material that used tar as an adhesive. The tar is difficult to remove and produces great amounts of unusable sawdust and tar. And there a few spots that need repair – a corner where an old radiator leaked, a vent opening, some gouges. The work is just started, but it’s well on its way.
